GAME PARKS

OTHER PARKS AND RESERVES

Tanzania has several other parks and reserves apart from the Northern ones. These areas, varying from tiny to enormous, all have their unique features in terms of scenery, habitat, and wildlife. In general, they are remote with access being difficult, accommodation very limited, and the cost of safaris high. Ranger will be pleased to quote for any expedition on a custom basis.

THE SELOUS GAME RESERVE
This is an area of 21,000 square miles- the largest and least exploited game reserve in Africa. The park starts south of Dar es Salaam includes a large section of coastline, bush country, floodplains and forests. Access is best by light plane and accommodation is in low capacity camps.

MIKUMI NATIONAL PARK
This park adjoins the Selous Game Reserve but is comparatively easier to reach and tour.

RUAHA NATIONAL PARK
This is a large reserve of over 10,000 square kilometres, situated almost in the centre of the country. The main centre of attraction for visitors is the Great Ruaha river in the rift valley.

GOMBE STREAM NATIONAL PARK
This park has become famous because of the extensive studies of chimpanzees conducted here by the naturalist Jane Goodall over many years. Access to the park is by boat or light plane only, there being no roads in the area.

MAHALE MOUNTAIN PARK
This park is not far from Gombe on the shores of Lake Tanganyika and even more remote and difficult to access.

KATAVI NATIONAL PARK
Further south from Mahale lies this park on the high flood plain surrounding Lake Katavi.
